How To Turn Your Mobile Phone Into A Media Station
Wednesday, 24 January 2007

I enjoyed a lot watching movies on my N80 contrarily to many others who find it not fun at all, well especially in a place where you are alone with your phone I think it's pretty interesting to give it a try. So what you need is only your mobile phone with video support 3GP is always supported, but I personally prefer avi now that DivX Player is available for mobile .

Convert your movies

So to get started you can use Acala 3GP Movies Free to convert your local movies to 3GP, and you can use the Divx converter to convert to small avi. Movie size is from 50MB to 200MB depending on the compression, but you can get usually any movie converted in less than 100MB in avi. That's also the reason why I recommend it better than 3GP, because usually compressed 3GP movies are between 100MB and 150MB with a good quality. That in general what I got but you can always get less or more size depending on the movie quality, length and compression you used.

Connectivity

Now that you have your movies ready on your PC, you can easily copy it to your mobile phone using Nokia PC Suite and your Nokia cable. But here for copying movies I'll better recommend you to get a memory card reader with an SD card of 1GB or 2GB that will be great to hold your collection of movies to see anytime you need. Memory card is faster to copy large amount of data but be sure to use the "Remove Mem. card" option before removing the memory card to avoid loosing your memory card.

I have found memory card readers for less than $10 and 1GB SD card around $20 USD, so this will cost around $30 in total not a big budget in my opinion.

Software

Now you copied movies to your mobile, install DivX Player Mobile if you don't have it already. It's better than 3GP and real player because you have more freedom to play movies, pause, forward, backward, pause ... etc. In the same time that compressed AVI are better smaller than 3GP with better quality.

Keep your phone charged

Flat batteries could make watching your favorite movie boring, because a movie can take an hour or two always be sure to keep your batteries fully charged. Also it's not good to charge batteries only if it's totally flat, that's why I use some utilities that consume the remaining battery energy before put it in charger for a better lifetime.

If you travel be sure to take a travel charger with you, that's one two hours to have more fun.
